The Cured in Place Pipe Lining Method and the Pipe Bursting Method: Which is Best for You?

Pipes underneath a local home

Trenchless sewer line repair offers pipe repairs and replacement without disrupting your yard or landscaping. The most common and effective methods of trenchless repair are pipe lining and pipe bursting. But which method is right for you? Well, that depends.

Cured in Place Pipe Lining Method or CIPP

Using the cured in place pipe lining method allows you to repair a sewer line without removing your current pipe. Essentially, a new pipe will be formed inside of your old pipe to replace it. This is usually necessary when a pipe has cracked, been penetrated, or just degraded over time, but has maintained its structure. All you need is an access point—this allows you to avoid excessive trench digging.

Replacing a pipe with a cured in place lining is a quick process and can provide better durability.  The process is started by using a sewer camera to check for obstructions and verify the integrity of the current pipe. Any obstacles to the sewer will need to be removed. At Black Diamond Electric, Plumbing, Heating and Air, we use our state of the art hot water hydro-jetter to clean and clear away any blockage in the existing sewer line. Next, a flexible tube coated in resin will be sent through the old pipe. This tube will inflate until it comes in contact with all the sides of the old pipe. This resin-coated tube will harden becoming your new cured in place pipe.  A benefit of a cured in place pipe is that it is one solid pipe, eliminating the possibility of leaks where connections would typically be. It is also corrosion-resistant. Another camera inspection is then done to ensure the pipe has been installed correctly.

The cured in place pipe lining method is an excellent alternative for those with expensive landscaping or that have a sewer line located under the driveway or other structures. This method uses little to no digging, meaning your property and landscaping will experience minimal disruption.

Pipe Bursting Method

Pipe bursting is just what it sounds like—bursting pipes. This method intentionally breaks severely damaged pipes with a trenchless technique while also replacing the pipes. This is a quick way to replace underground piping with new piping. If your current pipes have collapsed, this may be the best option for you. This is an excellent option for a broken sewer line.

Pipe bursting works by inserting a pipe bursting tool into your current pipe. This tool will break apart or burst existing pipes while also pushing broken pieces aside into surrounding soil and pulling a new pipe into place.

Pipe bursting is an excellent solution for sewer pipes that are severely damaged and collapsed. The pipe bursting method is also a trenchless repair—which means minimal disruption to your landscaping.
